The Louisiana Department of Treasury recently launched the Great Employee Give Back of 2023 program to celebrate National Unclaimed Property Day. The pilot program, which he launched in partnership with Baton Rouge General, involved handing out 572 unclaimed property checks amounting to over $42,000 to employees of Baton Rouge General. Schroder described giving away unclaimed property checks as his favorite part of his job and encouraged other businesses and organizations to follow suit to help connect their employees with any lost money they may have in the system.
Through the Great Employee Give Back of 2023 initiative, employers can provide data, including current addresses, which our Unclaimed Property team will match against their records. If there is a match, employees can easily claim their money, and in some cases, we can issue checks without any action from the employee.
The pilot program began with Baton Rouge General, which has over 4,000 employees. After the health system received a check of its own at the end of 2022, its leaders decided to do the same for their team members. BRG's CFO, Kendall Johnson, praised the Unclaimed Property team for being easy to work with and said they had hand-delivered the checks to employees after the organization sent them a list of its employees a few weeks ago.
State Treasurer Schroder noted that the Louisiana Department of Treasury has over $1 billion of unclaimed money waiting to be claimed, with one in six Louisianans having money in the Unclaimed Property Program, with an average claim of around $900. The department is always seeking data sources with current addresses and recognizes that employers should have that information for their employees. The Unclaimed Property team is constantly looking for new ways to connect people with their forgotten or lost money.
